Past Discussions

The secret of platform 13 / Eva Ibbotson ; illustrated by Sue Porter.
A forgotten door on an abandoned railway platform is the entrance to a magical kingdom--an island where humans live happily with mermaids, ogres, and other wonderful creatures. Carefully hidden from the world, the Island is only accessible when the door opens for nine days every nine years. When the beastly Mrs. Trottle kidnaps the Island's young prince, it's up to a strange band of rescuers to save him. But can the rescuers--an ogre, a hag, a wizard, and a fey--sneak around London unnoticed? Fans of Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, and E. Nesbit will delight in this comic fantasy.

The Watsons go to Birmingham--1963 / a novel by Christopher Paul Curtis.
Ten-year-old Kenny and his family, the Watsons of Flint, Michigan, are heading for Birmingham, Alabama, and one of the darkest moments in American history. Honors include 1996 Newbery Honor Book, 1996 Coretta Scott King Honor Book, and a "New York Times Book Review" Best Book. Copyright #169; Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

My Louisiana sky / Kimberly Willis Holt.

"My Louisiana Sky" is filled with unforgettable characters and the importance of family and home.

Ruby Holler / Sharon Creech.
"Trouble twins" Dallas and Florida are orphans who have given up believing there is such a thing as a loving home. Tiller and Sairy are an eccentric older couple who live in the beautiful, mysterious Ruby Holler, but they're restless for one more big adventure. When they invite the twins to join them on their journeys, they first must all stay together in the Holler, and the magic of the place takes over. Two pairs of lives grow closer, and are changed forever. Book jacket.

Double identity / Margaret Peterson Haddix.
