Mission  Statement

Literacy Volunteers of Methuen believes that its mission is to promote and encourage  increased literacy skills for both English language learners and native English speakers in the Methuen area through the use of trained volunteer tutors.  An increase in the literacy level of the community benefits everyone - individuals and families, as well as the community as a whole.


Literacy Volunteers of Methuen
is actively recruiting volunteer tutors to work with adult immigrants who need to gain English conversation and or reading skills in order to improve their quality of life in the community (ESOL) or with native English speakers who lack basic reading and writing skills (Basic Literacy).  You must be over eighteen and have a high school diploma in order to be considered as a volunteer tutor.  No prior education experience or knowledge of a foreign language is necessary.


Tutor Job Description

  • Attend tutor orientation and training sessions totaling approximately 18 hours.

  • Agree to tutor your student for two hours per week over a period of at least 9 months.

  • Tutors must attend at least one in-service training per year.

  • Must prepare lessons and submit monthly reports to the Literacy office.

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify.

  • In order to tutor ESOL students, you must speak English fluently and clearly. 


Upcoming Programs:

Literacy Orientation Sessions - A brief introduction to the problem of literacy in our community, and a discussion of the role and responsibililty of volunteer tutors.  Tutors must attend an orientation session before participating in the upcoming ESOL tutor training sessions.

March 11th at 7:00 pm in the study room.
Wednesday, March 19th at 2:00 pm in the study room.
Saturday, March 22nd at 10:00 am in the study room.
