Literacy Volunteers of Methuen
The Nevins Memorial Library has partnered with the Methuen Adult Learning Center and the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts to develop an adult literacy program to bring free, private, flexible, individualized instruction to adults in the community who are struggling everyday with basic reading and language problems. The waiting list for classroom programs in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Basic Education (ABE) is long and so we are offering this alternative program to help those individuals who, for one reason or another, are unable to commit to those programs.
Volunteers need only be high school graduates and be fluent English speakers. While previous teaching experience and foreign language abilities may be a bonus they are not required to become a tutor. Please contact Sue Jefferson at 978-686-4080 x 32 to reserve a spot in the orientations and/or trainings. You must have attended an orientation to be admitted to the training sessions.
ESOL Tutor Orientation:
Tuesday, September 15th from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Thursday, September 17th from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Saturday, September 19th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Tuesday, September 22nd from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tuesday, September 29th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tuesday, October 6th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tuesday, October 13th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tuesday, October 20th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tuesday, October 27th from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Tutors must attend one orientation session and each of the training dates.
Tutor Job Description

Attend tutor orientation and training sessions totaling approximately 18 hours.

Agree to tutor your student for two hours per week over a period of at least 9 months.

Tutors must attend at least one in-service training per year.

Must prepare lessons and submit monthly reports to the Literacy office.

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify.

In order to tutor ESOL students, you must speak English fluently and clearly.
