Friends of the Nevins Library Annual Report 2010-2011
The Friends of the Nevins Memorial Library had another exceptionally busy and active year since our last annual meeting in October 2010. We have held fundraisers, sponsored and helped out at library events, worked on long-range plans and funded many library projects. Our monthly meetings are scheduled on the first Monday of each month, except for July, at 7:30PM in the Garden Room. All members of the Friends are invited to attend any of our meetings. The Executive Board welcomes ideas and participation from the membership. The 2010-2011 Executive Board was made up of the Officers, two (2) Representatives from the Library Staff (including the Library Director), and one (1) Representative from the Library Trustees. Executive Board Members are as follows: President - Carla Friedrich Vice President - Shirley Toomey Secretary - Jeanne Turgeon Treasurer - Phyllis Lungo Library Trustee - Ralph Prolman Library Director - Krista McLeod Library Staff / Membership Recorder- Beverly Winn Thank you to all members who attended General Meetings and to all of the many other members who volunteered to help out in our many activities. Those helpers are too numerous to mention in this brief report, but their help is deeply appreciated! At this time I would like to briefly review the Friends’ activities over the past year. During the month of November, we held our Book Fair at Barnes & Nobles which was quite successful. We raised $244.60 in gift card form which was presented to our Library Director for purchasing of materials for the Library. In December, we again collaborated with the North Regional Theatre Workshop (NRTW) to provide refreshments during their “Home for the Holidays” concert. It was a splendid event for all those attending! At the latter part of January, the Friends hosted Alfred M. Zappala, Methuen author, who spoke on this newly released book entitled The Reverse Immigrant and the history of Sicily. It was well attended and an enjoyable event. March did not slip by the Friends as we did host a dining fundraiser through The Chateau of Andover. It was well received, and we anticipate continuing with this activity in the upcoming year. April was a busy month for the Friends as we hosted “Afternoon Tea with Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy,” in which Robin Lane dramatized the life of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy followed by High Tea. The event was quite elegant and we raised over $1,000.00 for the Friends. At the end of April, the Friends again assisted the NRTW by providing refreshments during their “Lerner & Loewe” Concert and had a sensational time. In August, we sponsored Friends’ Day at the Lowell Spinners; however, this year the weather did not cooperate with us! The year wrapped up with our Annual Book Sale that was held the weekend of September 17h. This year we tried something new with our “Preview Night” on September 16th. It was very well received and will be held again next year. In addition to the activities listed above, the Friends have also been able to provide: (1) passes to popular museums; (2) children, teen and adult summer reading programs; (3) book review magazine entitled “Book Page” and (4) support for the Nevins Literacy Program. Upcoming events this year will include a “Fuddruckers Evening,” the Book Fair at Barnes & Noble on Saturday, December 3rd, an American Girl Doll Drawing and the Holiday Concert with the NRTW. In 2012, we are researching other food fundraisers, the Spring Concert with the NRTW and an American Girl Doll Tea. More details will follow concerning all the above captioned events. Thank you to the members of the Friends of the Nevins Memorial Library who have worked throughout the year in support of our fund raising efforts. Sincerely, Carla M. Friedrich President
