Victorian &
Edwardian Mysteries
May 20th at 7:00 pm in the Trustee's Room
The Victorian Age revolves around the reign of Great Britain's Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901.  It was a time of great achievements and change.  Historically significant medical, scientific and technological advances were being made and the world of literature was blooming.  Both the British Empire and the United States experienced a boom in population and expanded into new  territories.  It was also a time of increasingly bloody wars for Britain as well as the Civil War in America. The Edwardian Period (1901-1910) is named after Queen Victoria's successor, her son Edward VII.  This list primarily focuses on Victorian mysteries because this was such an important and atmospheric period of time and there is a wealth of novels to choose from.  The majority of these titles take place in Great Britain as the British Empire held a fourth of the world's land and people, but there are some titles included that reflect the Victorian Age in the United States and Canada.  During the Victorian Age, Edgar Allen Poe in America and then Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Britain helped pioneer the modern mystery story.

The following is a list of titles by author.  Whenever possible, the series is listed in order by publication date.   This is by no means an exhaustive list, and please let us know if you feel a title or author should be included. Please read one or more of these authors and/or titles and come prepared to discuss your impressions of them with the group.
