Growing Community

Historically, the Nevins Library brought together exceptional resources for education, personal growth, and community engagement. Today, we continue to build on that legacy for the people of Methuen and our neighbors by ensuring access to technology and materials that assist with learning and living, promoting literacy for all ages, and creating positive experiences that enrich lives and connect our communities.

At the Nevins Library, you’ll find a wide array of resources at your fingertips: media subscriptions, on-site collections, advanced databases, educational events, and support services. Our knowledgeable, friendly staff and volunteers are always available to help. It’s easy to see why the Nevins Library serves as the heart and center of our city—where everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join in, express themselves, explore, and find inspiration.

Our History

Built in 1883 in memory of David Nevins Sr., the Library sits on a beautiful and inviting eight-acre campus of parkland in the center of Methuen—just minutes from I-495 and I-93. The Library’s Romanesque Revival style models the great libraries designed by Boston architect H. H. Richardson. In 2002, renovations updated the Nevins Library for the 21st century with a historically sensitive and elegant addition—featuring three public meeting rooms, updated technology, and large, comfortable reading rooms.

The Nevins Library is a private, non-profit organization that partners with the City of Methuen to maintain a modern, full-service public library for residents and visitors. Currently, the Library has a staff of 30 full- and part-time employees, and is overseen by a seven-member Board of Trustees. Supported with tax dollars, private funding, state aid, and donations, the Nevins Library contributes a variety of positive and helpful resources and programs to enrich our growing community.
