Hoopla Announcement

Like many public libraries, we’ve made the difficult decision to end our contract with the Hoopla Digital service. Access to Hoopla for Nevins Library patrons will end on June 30, 2026. While we appreciate the value Hoopla brings to our digital collections, the platform’s pricing and lending model options have become unsustainable for the library’s budget.

Why are we discontinuing Hoopla?

Hoopla’s model is pay-per-checkout, meaning we pay a fee each time an item is checked out, rather than paying for the book itself. This model makes budgeting difficult to plan for and costs increase in exponential terms.

What did we try before cancelling?

We tried many tactics for getting our Hoopla spending within budget including lowering the number of monthly checkouts per patron and restricting, based on their price, some of the items that could be borrowed through Hoopla. Unfortunately, even with these measures in place the cost of hoopla continues to exceed our budget.

What happens if a patron has something checked out when the service ends?

If you have an item checked out at the time of cancellation (June 30), you’ll still have access to it for the full loan period. For example, if you borrowed an eAudiobook on the night before cancellation, you’ll still be able to listen to it for the full borrowing period of 21 days.

Will patrons still be able to access their accounts?

Yes! Patrons will continue to have access to their accounts and borrowing history. However, you won’t be able to borrow content through our library. If you’re also a member of another library that offers Hoopla, you can update your library info in the Hoopla App’s account settings.

How can I still get eBooks, eAudiobooks, and eMovies and TV shows?

We still have Libby, an eBook and eAudiobook platform that works through an app. You can get it through the App Store or Google Play, or you can go to libbyapp.com on any browser. Haven’t used Libby before? We have a guide to using Libby here.

On July 1st we will also have a new movie platform called Kanopy. You can find movies, documentaries, foreign films, classic cinema, independent films, and TV shows and stream them to your device or to your TV. Watch this space for how to Get Started with Kanopy soon! (Those words that were just typed will magically turn into a link once the service is live).
